As he approached his 13th birthday, he became an apprentice under the alchemist [[Mackleroy]], who worked as an apothecary for the monks of [[Copatica Monastery]]. Mackleroy was not a monk proper, but worked there under their blessing, and he took Vasili in almost as a foster father. After two years, Mackleroy departed Copatica under unclear circumstances, and left Vasili under the care and tutelage of the monks. When Vasili joined, [[Nila]] was the Teacher of the Word, [[Larza]] was the Teacher of the Spirit, and [[Bazin]] was Teacher of the Body. All three of these monks have been in the order for a long time and very distinguished. Typically monks would join in classes of six. However, because Vasili had already been frequenting the monastery for the last two years, and because they were desperate for members, an exception was made for Vasili. Copatica was a rather underfunded monastery, clearly dying and withering away. The nearby town was becoming smaller and smaller, and Vasili was the first member to join in fifteen years. The closest members in age were 25: approximately ten full years older than him. The two most impressionable on Vasili were [[Sarsen]] and [[Alina]]. During the next few years, Nila passed away. Sarsen was appointed to take her place.
