# Introduction
Scars are reflections of one's experiences near death. Scars can affect either the Body, the Mind, or the Spirit. If a character receives three scars of the same type, they die.
# Types of Scars
## Scars of the Body
Scars of the Body are the most common scars to collect. Scars of the Body most often occur during Combat Encounters, after taking physical damage in a Critical Status.
## Scars of the Mind
Scars of the Mind are the second most common scars to collect. Scars of the Mind most often occur during Combat Encounters, after taking magical or psychic damage in a Critical Status. They may also occur from extremely traumatic events.
## Scars of the Spirit
Scars of the Spirit are the rarest form of scars. Scars of the Spirit typically occur when one overuses their own willpower. Breaking sacred vows also typically invoke a scar of the spirit.
# Death
When three scars of the same type are applied, a character dies. Upon player death, a Narrator can offer either **Call of the Valkyrie** or **Flight of the Survivors.**
## Call of the Valkyrie
Call of the Valkyrie is a combat mechanic. After the death of a Player Character, all remaining Player Characters are filled with righteous despair and anger at the death of a loss of their companion. All living PCs are filled to maximum [[Reserves]] and shake off all [[Statuses|Afflictions]]. Unconscious Player Characters are roused to open their eyes, and can see any comrades still standing and the death of their friend. Supernatural strength fills their being and allows them to rise.
## Flight of the Survivors
Flight of the Survivors allows the party to immediately admit defeat and retract themselves from a fight immediately with no additional loss. If a party forgoes Flight of the Survivors and chooses Call of the Valkyrie, they cannot take Flight of the Survivors until another party member dies.
