# Step 0 - Backstory
Having a general idea of your character's backstory is usually a good idea to guide decision making during the character creation process. There is no reason you can't write a backstory alongside the process of building a character for play. It is recommended a backstory for your character answers most of the following questions.
- What are their ideals?
- What are their goals?
- What are their fears?
- What do they most depend on?
- What do they despise the most?
- What memories do they regret?
- What memories do they cherish?
- What causes them the most pain?
- What brings them the most joy?
- What’s their defining vice?
- What’s their defining virtue?
- What is their coping strategy, both specific and abstract?
# Step 1 - Faculties and Senses
Start with a [[Blank Statline]]. Assign the following modifiers to [[Faculties|Faculty]] Aptitudes:
- +2 Faculty, +3 Sense
- +2 Faculty, +2 Sense
- +2 Faculty, +1 Sense
- +1 Faculty, +1 Sense
- +1 Faculty, +0 Sense
- +0 Faculty, +0 Sense
- +0 Faculty, -1 Sense
- -1 Faculty, -1 All Senses
# Step 2 - Epithets
Based on your character's backstory, choose epithets that describe their [[Standing]] and [[Role]]. During this process, you will also create, in cooperation with your Narrator, an "heirloom" item for your character. This is a custom item, with unique features. Did you inherit this item recently? Is it from your past? While it shouldn't be overpowering, your item has the potential to be interesting and narrative provoking.
You should then select up to four [[Heritage]] epithets, describing your family's bloodline. From the selected Heritages, you must choose one of each: Frame, Physiology, Auxiliary, Affinity.
After establishing your Role, if you weren't directed to grab a Talent at that point, you may take +1 in any one talent that would work with your character's background.
