# Introduction
The Inari are a [[Heritage]] steeped in respectability and manners. Usually slenderly built, Inari are known for their ability to transform into foxes.
## Physiology
Inari have two forms: [[Entities|Folk]] form and [[Fox]] form. They are born in folk form, resembling most other heritages and only distinguishable by their carnivorous teeth. Around puberty they begin to grow a tail and an additional set of furred ears at the top of their head. Some grow fur and pads on their palms and base of their feet, and even find their nails becoming claw-like, but this is simply their body going through the process, and these recede in time. Approximately around the age of 20, Inari achieve maturity, which is marked by their ability to fully become a [[Fox]]. It is rather common to go to bed in their folk form and to awake in their fox form. Many a young Inari has panicked over their unexpected maturity, and over the next day or two must learn to adapt to control their new ability. Soon though, Inari find themselves changing with ease.
Maturity can happen early or late, and Inari that change are considered adults, regardless of age difference. Woe to the elder sibling that finds themselves still treated by society as a child while their younger sibling is seen as an adult. There have been cases where puberty has taken to the age of 30 before maturing; this, however, is a rarity. Inari have a lifespan of roughly 200 years, only outpaced in their longevity by the [[Jotunn]].
Inari may have red, orange, brown, grey or black fur. Yellow, white, and golden fur are only seen among Inari with many tails. Tails are important in Inari culture; unlike most races, which have [[Mana]] flowing through their blood, Inari anatomy stores all the mana in their tails. If a Inari tail is severed, they quite literally lose a significant connection to that mana pool. And in the most gruesome circumstances, if all tails of an Inari are severed, they are trapped in their folk form with their stubbed tails.
Inari have one tail during puberty, but over time and high exposure to magic, they may find themselves continuing to mature and growing additional tails, with a maximum of nine tails. Larger tail numbers are seen as status symbols, and more than three tails are usually only seen among the upper echelons of education and experience, such as professors, adventurers, doctors, soldiers, nobility, and royalty.
## General Culture
Inari value cleverness and wit, and enjoy banter and wordplay. While wealth is also highly prized, so too are humble appearances, and the Inari are very careful and deliberate about how they portray their social standing. Inari enjoy change and experimentation, and the younger population usually flits from one point of life to the next. Only once Inari age are they content with a quiet life. As such, the farming populace is significantly older, and Inari have learned the hard way time and time again across the generations how important it is to respect your elders.

# Inari Tail Affinities
Inari are unique in that their affinities are progressive in nature, and tied to the amount of [[Inari Tail Affinities|tails]] they have. All Inari start with one, and many elders pass away with a tail count between three and five. Inari tails almost always take years of experience and power. Because of this, you and your Narrator should speak about setting expectations for character growth in this regard, as these abilities scale up significantly and are not intended to be taken with regularity. While in-universe Inari are not in control of their tail growth, the player in charge of them is in control and cannot be forced to grow a tail against their will.
