Heðra ek æsta, sa elri þjóð Til sa jorð en Jotunnkin, Muna langt fram forn dagr liða Sa Fjall um utan himinjoðyr \- [[The Himinjoðyr]] --- # Introduction The Dverg people (pl: Dvergr) are forged from the earth itself. They are deeply proud of their culture and tradition, and value experience above all else. They are usually somewhat monocultured, not out of xenophobia, but because their biggest cities are built deep into the mountains, and only to a dverg would a life without sunlight sound perfectly fine. ## Physiology The Dverg have a standard folk-like body, although they tend to range on the shorter end, typically somewhere between 1 to 2 meters tall. They are sturdily built; with broad shoulders and a wider frame. All dvergr, regardless of age or gender, can grow a beard as easily as they grow hair on their head. These hairs are rather sensitive. The state of a dverg's beard is an indication of their status and honor. Most dvergr are attuned to certain stone types at birth. These affinities are typically handed down genetically. Dverg tend to have large families, and they boast a lifespan of somewhere between 175-225 years. ## General Culture Dverg culture is centered around the mining industry. Of all [[Heritage|heritages]], they are uniquely qualified in this line of work. Their sensitive beards give them a great sense of air pressure and currents, and they thrive without sunlight, even for years at a time. Dvergr tend to use all manners of precious metals and jewels in practical use, and tend to barter with that supply internally, forgoing traditional money with a set value. Dverg-centric merchants have adapted to using silver pieces when trading with external cultures, but usually hoard gold for practical use back home. Dvergr maintain strong relations to other cultures, particularly the Gnommish peoples. [[Gnomes]] have always been considered a precious ally to the Dverg people, with a long, mutual history spanning ages upon ages. However, the same broad strokes of culture typically paint a majority of Dverg who are hostile towards [[Elves]], holding an old rivalry with them that no one can remember the origin. Despite this, most Dvergr find it impolite to express this in public and especially impolite to begrudge individuals. Traditionally, Dvergr have many children, and hold onto their career paths for a lifetime. In spite of popular belief, Dvergr do not expect every member of their society be physically powerful, but they do expect consistency. Cultural expectations frown on those who change their fields of interest too wildly or late in life, although some small tuning is acceptable. The blacksmith that becomes a locksmith is generally acceptable, but the miner who becomes a doctor is usually not trusted to know their craft. # Statline Entity Types: [[Entities|Folk]], [[Earth]], [[Entities|Cthonic]] [[Size and Weight]]: Medium, Heavyweight [[Move|Speed]]: 12 meters [[Vulnerabilities and Resistances|Resistance]]: [[Earth]], [[Damage|Piercing]], [[Fire]] [[Vulnerabilities and Resistances|Vulnerabilities]]: [[Entities|Botanical]], [[Water]], [[Damage|Concussive]], [[Damage|Corrosive]] +1 [[Strength|Brawn]], +2 [[Strength|Stalwart]], +2 [[Constitution|Vigor]] [[Dusksight]] - 16 meters [[Claustrophiliac]] [[Ravenous]] [[Ancient Power]] ## Optional Facets - [[Natural Spelunkers]] - [[Steinskift]] - [[Runecraft Tradition]] # Birthstone Affinities When Dvergr are born, they resonate with certain gems and stones. These are referred to as borinsteins, or [[Birthstones]]. Birthstones are typically hereditary, although there are occasional exceptions.  Most dvergr keep a fragment of their birthstone on their person for both practical and sentimental reasons. They typically use this fragment when invoking their affinities. The five most common birthstones are collectively known as the Cardinal Birthstones. The cardinal birthstones are: - [[Amethyst]] - [[Paragon Diamond]] - [[Emerald]] - [[Ruby]] - [[Sapphire]] Each affinity has a unique facet. - [[Throat of Tears]] - [[Sieve of Water]] - [[Gift of Eyes]] - [[Forge of Stone]] - [[Sight of Ice]] --- See also: [[Dvergr History]]
