# Introduction Aspects are fundamental parts of your character that grant [[Facets]] as your character grows from [[Chapters|Chapter]] to chapter. Proficiencies are specialized skills obtained by characters that do not give facets, but are instead a representation of one's knowledge in a certain subject. # Aspects Aspects are primarily assigned through [[Class|Classes]]. Most classes assign you three Aspects. Additionally, you may gain an additional Aspect, if your [[Main Glossary|Narrator]] agrees. This Aspect would be from a specific system associated with your character's [[Character Creation|backstory]]. At the end of a [[Chapters|Chapter]], you gain a facet from a list of facets associated with your Aspects. You also increase one of your Aspect Scores by +1. # Proficiencies Proficiencies are usually gained in a narrative fashion, and initially given through a character's backstory. Heritages and Classes may assign a proficiency. Some aspects can double as a proficiency in certain circumstances. Proficiencies normally do not increase at the end of a Chapter, but instead through specific and deliberate study and tutelage during the course of the game. Weapons and items may require certain proficiency levels to make full use of them. # Rating Aspects and Proficiencies have a shared rating system. Aspect ratings have a range between 0 and +6. Proficiency ratings have a range between -6 and +6. The number is an approximate representation of knowledge or experience a character has in any particular ability or skill. - **Disaster: -3**; the character is humorously inept at this task most of the time. - **Unfamiliar: -1**; the character is wholly unfamiliar with this skill. - **Familiar: +0**; the character has seen the skill done before, but has had little to no practice. - **Amateur: +1**; the character has had a chance to exercise the skill frequently in down time or taken rudimentary training. - **Adept: +2**; the character is comfortable performing the skill or techniques and has mastered the basics of it. - **Journeyfolk: +3**; plenty of experience with the skill and practice. They are notable among those who are not trained, although not so much among their peers in the profession. - **Professional: +4**; Thorough study and years of experience, and an understanding of edge cases or uncommon problems one might come across. These are the most efficient (and potentially expensive) practitioners that might still be considered somewhat common to come across in any well populated city. - **Expert: +5**; a level of expertise. They are usually well regarded by others who understand the craft and their opinion is most valuable. An advanced comprehension of the material is understood on an academic level. These are typically professors, trainers, instructors, or the equivalent in the field. - **Master: +6**; One who understands all techniques of the field and actively pushes against the boundaries of folk knowledge, learning and understanding more of the field. These masters are founts of knowledge to look up to. This level of mastery usually finds itself in the courts of royalty or the most prestigious of academies.
