# Introduction
Alchemy is the study of matter and change. The study with the widest range, this science catalogues the interactions and effects between different physical objects. Skilled alchemists are adept at handling exact measurements, precise application of materials, and transforming matter between its different forms: gas, liquid, plasma, and solid.
This is considered to be the [[The Hermetics|Hermetic]] study of [[Substance]].
# General Process
The alchemical process begins with choosing a base ingredient, known as a Catalyst. Added to the ingredient are active ingredients known as Integrants. Certain recipes will call for additional, inactive ingredients known as Excipients.
## Catalysts
A Catalyst component works as the medium in which Integrants may interact and enact their properties. Catalysts typically have very muted influence, and are chosen out of necessity as demanded by the volatility of the Integrants. While most Catalysts are liquid, they can take other forms of matter, the most often alternative being gas.
## Integrants
An Integrant is an ingredient with active effects in a compound it is added to. They typically have effects that cannot be harvested until they are combined with a Catalyst.
### Effect Tiers
Effects are tiered by how many ingredients of that type are required. While Tier I effects are guaranteed to show up in a deliberate (and successful) alchemy attempt, Tier II effects require at least one more ingredient with that effect to be accessible. Additionally, higher Tiered effects will need to be activated by an appropriate Excipient or Catalyst. Higher Tiered effects also require a high enough set of alchemy tools to take effect.
If one ingredient has a higher Tier effect, and that same effect is on a lower Tier for another ingredient, the latter ingredient is more powerful, and will determine the number of ingredients required.
## Excipients
Excipients are ingredients that do not add or change active properties in the compound but may increase the lifespan of an expiring compound or else make the creation process easier. Most excipients have specific requirements, such as only working in healing solutions or requiring only certain plant types be used.
## Reagents
Reagents are powerful ingredients that act as activators, and are often required to complete the compound process.
# Alchemy Gameplay
The base [[Abilities and Skills|Difficulty Check]] (DC) is determined by the Catalyst used, and increased by Integrants and decreased by Excipients. If the DC is less than 12, the process will not work and be considered null. Most potions and consumables require 2hg to be active.
